How to Become a Resident of Mexico as a Canadian

As a Canadian you don’t “just move” to Mexico and become a resident—you go through a visa process first, usually starting from outside Mexico.
Here’s the basic path:
1) Choose the type of residency
Mexico mainly has two options:
Temporary Resident (usually 1–4 years)
Permanent Resident (long-term, no renewals)
Most Canadians start with temporary residency unless they qualify directly for permanent residency (e.g., strong income, retirement funds, or family ties).
2) Apply at a Mexican consulate in Canada (or outside Mexico)
You must usually apply before entering Mexico.
You go to a Mexican consulate (for example in Vancouver) and apply for a residency visa
3) Meet financial requirements (key part)
This is usually the main filter.
Typical examples:
Monthly income (often from pensions, work, investments)
OR savings in a bank account
4) Get the visa sticker in your passport
If approved, the consulate puts a temporary resident visa sticker in your passport.
This is NOT your residency card yet—it just lets you enter Mexico to finalize it.
5) Finish the process inside Mexico
Once you arrive in Mexico (within ~30 days), you must go to immigration (Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM)) and exchange the visa for a resident card.
6) Maintain or upgrade your status
Temporary residency is usually renewed yearly (or multi-year options)
After about 4 years, you can often convert to permanent residency
Or you may qualify earlier depending on circumstances
